How many grinding hammers does a standard ACM mill rotor have

The quantity of grinding hammers on an ACM rotor is not fixed. It scales with rotor diameter and machine model, and can be customised for different raw materials, target fineness and throughput requirements. Standard ACM disc rotors generally use evenly spaced fixed bar hammers mounted radially on the rotor plate.

Hammer count by common ACM models

  • Small lab / pilot ACM (ACM-5 / ACM-10): 8 to 12 hammers. Compact rotor with fewer hammers, suitable for small batch testing and low-capacity fine grinding.
  • Medium standard production ACM (ACM-15 / ACM-30, the most widely used general-purpose model): 12 to 16 hammers. This is the mainstream standard configuration. Balanced impact frequency, airflow and power consumption for minerals, food additives and chemical powders.
  • Larger industrial ACM (ACM-50 / ACM-60): 16 to 20 hammers. Larger rotor diameter accommodates more hammers to increase collision points and boost throughput.
  • Heavy large-scale ACM (ACM-100 and above): 20 to 24 hammers. Multiple rows of hammers may be adopted on stacked rotor discs for high-volume continuous milling.

Pin rotor alternative

If the machine uses pin-type rotor instead of bar hammers, the pin number will rise sharply. Pin rotors typically have 24–48 pins, arranged in concentric multiple rings. Pin rotors are used when users need lower fines generation and gentler impact.

Why hammer quantity is adjustable

Hammer count directly affects impact frequency, particle collision probability and internal airflow pattern inside the grinding chamber.

  1. More hammers: Higher impact frequency, easier to produce finer powder, but higher air resistance and power draw. Too many hammers may also cause material clogging for sticky or agglomerated feed.
  2. Fewer hammers: Lower turbulence, less over-grinding and ultra-fine dust; preferred for coarser target particle size and fibrous raw materials.

Manufacturers usually supply a base standard hammer set, while allowing customers to reduce or add hammer numbers as an optional modification without changing the main rotor disc.

Additional balancing rule

Hammers must be installed symmetrically. Hammer removal or addition must maintain even circumferential distribution to preserve dynamic balance and avoid severe vibration at high rotational speed. When replacing worn hammers, operators should match hammer weight to keep rotor balance.

For the most common medium-size standard ACM mill (ACM-30 class), the default rotor is fitted with 12–16 grinding bar hammers. Smaller models use 8–12 hammers, while big production units use 16–24 hammers. Pin rotors use a much larger number of pins. Hammer quantity is configurable to tune fineness, throughput and powder morphology, with symmetrical installation mandatory for stable high-speed operation.
