What Is ACM Mill for Powder Coating Industry

The ACM mill (air classifying mill) is the standard core pulverizing equipment for thermoset powder coating manufacturing. It combines high-speed impact grinding and integrated dynamic air classification in one closed system. It grinds extruded, cooled resin flakes into finished electrostatic spray powder with tightly controlled particle size distribution. Unlike mineral ACM, powder coating ACM is optimized for heat-sensitive organic resin and strict powder flow / electrostatic charging performance. Fineness is adjustable, typically D50 from 20–60 μm, equivalent to 150–400 mesh.

Typical Powder Coating Production Workflow

After extrusion, cooling and flaking, the hard brittle resin chips (polyester, epoxy, hybrid, TGIC polyester) are fed into the ACM mill. Hammer impact breaks the flakes into fine particles. The built-in air classifier separates oversized particles and sends them back for regrinding, while qualified powder passes through to the baghouse collector.

Key Fineness Specifications for Powder Coating

  1. General-purpose electrostatic spray powder (most common)
    D50: 30–38 μm; D97 ≤75–90 μm
Used for architectural aluminum, home appliances, general metal parts. Limits excess ultrafine particles to guarantee stable electrostatic charge and good fluidization.
  2. High-gloss / thin-film / automotive powder coating
    D50: 20–30 μm; D97 ≤40–50 μm
Requires tighter PSD to achieve ultra-smooth thin film without orange peel or pinholes.
  3. Textured / thick-film powder coating
    D50: 40–60 μm; D97 ≤80–100 μm
Larger particle size improves deposition efficiency for thick textured coating layers.

Critical rule: Avoid excessive submicron fines. Too many ultrafines cause poor fluidization, high booth dust loss, inconsistent film thickness and safety explosion risks. Hammer count must be limited to control fine tail.

Special Construction Design for Powder Coating ACM

  1. Water cooling jacket on grinding chamber and classifier housing
The most important feature. Resin is heat-sensitive. Water cooling keeps outlet temperature controlled below 50°C to prevent resin softening, wall sticking, melting or premature curing.
  2. Product contact parts: stainless steel, smooth surface, minimized dead zones
Easy to disassemble and clean for fast color/batch changeover and reduce cross-contamination.
  3. Anti-static full system
Conductive liners, conductive filter bags and full grounding to eliminate static charge buildup. Organic coating dust is combustible, so ATEX explosion protection is mandatory.

Operational Parameter Tuning

  1. Classifier wheel speed (primary fineness control)
Higher classifier speed produces finer powder; lower speed creates coarser textured powder.
  2. Hammer count & rotor tip speed
Moderate hammer quantity and medium rotor speed. More hammers generate extra heat and unwanted ultrafine fines, which will ruin powder spray performance.
  3. Airflow setting
Slightly higher airflow reduces particle residence time and suppresses over-grinding and heat accumulation.
  4. Feed moisture: strictly controlled below 3%
High moisture leads to particle agglomeration and sticking on chamber walls.

Auxiliary System Requirements

  • Pulse baghouse with conductive ePTFE filter bags, cleaned by dry oil-free compressed air at 0.5–0.7 MPa.
  • Explosion venting / explosion suppression system for ATEX compliance.
  • Vibration, temperature and bearing overheat interlock protection; temperature alarm to stop mill before resin melting.

Limitations

  1. Only for hard, brittle extruded resin chips. Soft, low-melting, waxy or highly elastic resin cannot be processed, they deform and stick to hammers and chamber.
  2. Temperature must be strictly monitored; overheating causes resin fusion and batch scrap.
  3. Not suitable for ultra-fine powder below D50 15 μm due to poor fluidization and safety hazards.

ACM mill for powder coating industry is a water-cooled, anti-static, ATEX-compliant air classifying mill. It pulverizes extruded resin flakes into sprayable powder with controllable PSD for electrostatic coating. Hammer configuration, airflow and classifier speed are carefully tuned to restrict excess ultrafine fines, control temperature and maintain powder fluidization and coating surface quality.
