Chemical industry ACM mill (air classifying mill) is a heavy-duty or corrosion-resistant integrated impact grinding and air classification system for dry brittle chemical solids. It is widely used for producing functional chemical powders with controlled particle size distribution (120–800 mesh). PSD directly affects chemical reactivity, absorption, dispersion, bulk density, and mixing performance. Operators tune hammer count, rotor tip speed, airflow and classifier speed to meet target fineness and limit unwanted ultrafine fraction.
Typical Chemical Industry Applications
- Inorganic chemical fillers & extender pigments
Barium sulfate, precipitated silica, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, chromium oxide, alumina, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide. Used for coatings, rubber, plastics and chemical raw materials. - Flame retardant chemicals
Aluminum hydroxide (ATH), magnesium hydroxide. Low-temperature grinding is required to prevent thermal decomposition and maintain high whiteness. - Solid chemical additives
Dry brittle catalyst carriers, anti-caking agents, water treatment mineral chemicals, mineral-based adsorbent powder. - Organic chemical solids (dry, brittle, low melting point stable)
Dry organic pigments, dyestuffs, resin fragments, some chemical intermediate crystals. Heat-sensitive organics need water cooling jackets to avoid melting or agglomeration. - Ceramic & fine chemical raw materials
Feldspar, quartz, zirconium silicate and other ceramic chemical raw materials for ceramic glaze and advanced ceramic powder. - Special high-value / hazardous inorganic chemicals
Brittle metal oxides, precious metal compound powders. Requires full containment, anti-static and dust hazard control.
Fineness Range for Chemical ACM
D50: 18–60 μm, D97 adjustable from 120 mesh to 800 mesh.
Different chemical products require different PSD spans:
- Fillers: wider PSD, higher throughput
- Catalysts / adsorbents: strict control of fine tail to maintain specific surface area
- Pigments: narrow PSD to guarantee consistent tinting strength and dispersion
Chemical-grade ACM Construction Requirements
- Product contact material selection
- General inorganic chemicals: 304 stainless steel
- Acid/alkali corrosive chemicals: 316L stainless steel or lined anti-corrosion material
- Abrasive materials: ceramic or tungsten carbide wear liners to reduce wear and metal contamination
- Seals: chemical resistant PTFE gaskets, resistant to chemical vapors and powder corrosion
- Fully closed negative pressure system to prevent leakage of toxic, irritating or dusty chemical powder.
- Optional inert gas closed loop (nitrogen) for oxidizable, pyrophoric or combustible chemical powders.
Operational & Temperature Control
- Inorganic chemicals with high thermal stability: normal outlet temperature 40–70°C.
- Heat-sensitive organic chemicals: water cooling jacket to keep outlet temperature below 40–50°C, preventing melting, chemical decomposition or crystal transformation.
- Hammer count: moderate hammer configuration to balance fineness, heat generation and throughput. Too many hammers create excess heat and ultrafine fines, which may alter chemical properties.
- Feed moisture controlled below 3–4% to avoid agglomeration and chemical hydration.
Safety Features for Chemical ACM
- ATEX explosion protection for combustible organic chemical dust, anti-static grounding and conductive filter bags.
- Explosion venting or suppression system for high-risk dust.
- Temperature, vibration and overload interlock protection for equipment safety.
- Dust collector with dry, oil-free compressed air for pulse cleaning; oil contamination will ruin chemical powder quality.
- Isolation and containment design for toxic, irritant or carcinogenic chemical materials.
Limitations
- Not suitable for ductile, sticky, high oil, wet or elastic chemical materials. They will deform, stick to chamber walls or wrap rotor components.
- Fibrous chemical solids cannot be processed, fibers tangle rotor and classifier wheel.
- Highly reactive chemicals that react with air or moisture need special inert gas protection; ACM is only selected after safety assessment.
Chemical industry ACM mill is a customizable air classifying mill for dry brittle inorganic chemicals, flame retardants, pigments, catalysts and stable organic solid chemicals. It delivers adjustable fineness from 120 mesh to 800 mesh. Material of construction, cooling and inert gas systems are selected according to chemical corrosion, heat sensitivity and explosion risk. Hammer setup, airflow and classifier speed are optimized to control particle size, specific surface area and chemical product quality.
