Air classifying mill (ACM, also called air classifier mill) integrates high-speed impact grinding and built-in dynamic air classification. It works best for dry, brittle, free-flowing solid materials. The material fractures under hammer impact; elastic, ductile, sticky or long-fiber substances deform or wrap around rotating components instead of being crushed. Fineness range is typically 120–800 mesh, with flexible PSD tuning via classifier speed, hammer count, airflow and rotor tip speed.
Processable Material Categories
1. Non-metallic minerals (most widely used)
- Carbonates: calcium carbonate, limestone, dolomite, marble
- Siliceous minerals: diatomaceous earth, quartz, feldspar, wollastonite
- Silicates: talc, kaolin, mica, bentonite (dry grade)
- Sulfates: barite (barium sulfate), gypsum, anhydrite
- Oxides: alumina, iron oxide, chromium oxide, titanium dioxide
Note: Soft porous minerals like diatomaceous earth use low-impact settings to preserve porous frustule structure. Hard crystalline silica needs ceramic or tungsten carbide wear liners to reduce metal contamination.
2. Battery & flame-retardant inorganic powders
- Cathode materials: LFP, NCM, LCO, LMO
- Flame retardants: aluminum hydroxide (ATH), magnesium hydroxide
- Silica, precipitated silica, ceramic raw powder, calcined graphite
Note: Combustible battery materials require nitrogen inerting, anti-static grounding and explosion protection. Hard abrasive grades increase wear part consumption.
3. Brittle metal, precious metal and metal oxide powders
- Ruthenium, tungsten, molybdenum, brittle alloy fragments
- Metal oxides, ceramic oxide feedstock
Note: High material density raises required airflow velocity to prevent settling. Wear-resistant liners are essential. Full containment is required for toxic or noble metal dust.
4. Powder coating & dry organic brittle solids
- Extruded polyester, epoxy, hybrid powder coating chips
- Dry inorganic pigments, some low-wax organic pigments
Note: Heat-sensitive organics require water-jacket cooling to avoid resin melting, sticking and premature curing. High hammer count will generate excess heat and ultrafine fines.
5. Agro, food and nutraceutical dry brittle materials
- Agricultural: diatomaceous earth, mineral soil amendments, mineral feed additives
- Food grade: food calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, brittle shell powder
Note: Food/pharma production requires polished stainless steel construction, easy cleaning and cross-contamination prevention. High oil or fatty plant materials are not suitable.
6. Industrial fillers, pigments & ceramic raw materials
- Inorganic color pigments, extender fillers, calcined clays, ceramic body raw materials
Materials Not Suitable for Air Classifying Mill
- Ductile / malleable materials: soft copper, soft aluminum, ductile metals. They deform and flatten under impact rather than fracture.
- Long fibrous materials: wood fiber, hemp, cotton, long plant fibers. Fibers wrap around rotor and classifier wheel and cause blockage and vibration.
- Sticky, high oil, high-moisture feed: wet clay, high-fat plant material, sticky resin. They stick to chamber walls, blind the classifier and filter bags. Feed moisture should generally be kept below 3–4%.
- Elastomers / soft rubber: absorbs impact energy and cannot be pulverized into fine powder.
Core Material Selection Guidelines
- Brittleness: The fundamental requirement. Material must break upon impact. If it bends, ACM grinding is inefficient.
- Mohs Hardness: Best range Mohs 1–5. Harder materials (Mohs>5) can be processed but wear parts cost increases greatly, requiring carbide or ceramic protection.
- Heat sensitivity: Organic materials need water cooling; higher hammer count generates more heat and must be limited.
- Safety: Combustible, oxidizable or toxic powders require inert gas protection, static elimination and explosion relief design.
Air classifying mill can process dry brittle materials including non-metallic minerals, battery inorganic powders, brittle precious metal powders, powder coating resin chips, agro-mineral fillers and inorganic pigments. It is not suitable for ductile metals, long fibers, sticky or high-oil substances. Hammer configuration, rotor tip speed and wear protection are adjusted according to material hardness and brittleness to achieve target particle size.
