What Is 120–800 Mesh In ACM Mill

120–800 mesh is an industrial fineness specification for ACM mill output, meaning the ACM can be adjusted to produce powder with top cut ranging from 120 mesh down to 800 mesh (US standard sieve). This is a common quoted operating range for mineral, filler, and functional powder processing.

Mesh = number of openings per linear inch of a test sieve; higher mesh = smaller particle size.
Standard US mesh to micron conversion (D97 reference):

  • 120 mesh ≈125 μm
  • 200 mesh ≈74 μm
  • 325 mesh ≈44 μm
  • 400 mesh ≈37 μm
  • 800 mesh ≈15 μm

So 120–800 mesh = D97 from ~125 μm down to ~15 μm, fully inside the typical working window of an ACM air classifier mill.

What this means for ACM operation

ACM has no physical screen inside the grinding chamber. Its “mesh rating” is not set by a sieve screen, but by dynamic classifier wheel speed, hammer configuration, rotor tip speed and airflow.

  1. 120 mesh (coarser end, ~125 μm)
    • Low classifier wheel speed
    • Lower impact intensity / fewer hammers
    • Shorter particle residence time
    • Used for diatomaceous earth, mineral fillers, agricultural powder
  2. 800 mesh (fine end, ~15 μm)
    • High classifier wheel VFD speed
    • Optimized hammer count and rotor tip speed to increase fines generation
    • Carefully tuned airflow to extend residence time for brittle minerals
    • Requires wear-resistant ceramic liners for abrasive ores

Important limitation: 800 mesh (~15 μm) is the practical fine boundary for standard ACM. If you need finer than 800 mesh (sub‑10 μm, e.g., 1000 mesh and above), ACM becomes less efficient; jet mill is usually selected instead.

PSD behaviour for 120–800 mesh ACM powder

ACM powder rated as “-120 mesh” or “-800 mesh” means most particles pass through that sieve, but the PSD always contains a fine tail.

  • At 120 mesh setting: PSD is relatively wide, low submicron fraction
  • At 800 mesh setting: much higher proportion of ultrafine fines; hammer count adjustment directly changes how much fine tail appears (matches your earlier article topic)

Key machine specifications required for ACM to reach 120–800 mesh

  1. VFD-controlled dynamic classifier wheel (the main online adjustment for switching between 120 and 800 mesh)
  2. VFD main grinding rotor, adjustable tip speed
  3. Modular hammer rotor design for offline hammer count tuning
  4. Ceramic / tungsten carbide wear liners if processing abrasive minerals (diatomite, silica, etc.)
  5. Closed negative-pressure air circuit with variable fan airflow control
  6. Stable feeding system (screw or loss-in-weight feeder) to avoid PSD drift across the mesh range

Common misunderstanding

  • Mesh is a sieve test unit, while ACM internal control works by laser-diffraction PSD (D97). There is no perfect 1:1 mathematical conversion between sieve mesh and laser PSD; mesh is only a convenient commercial specification for customers.
  • When people state “ACM mill 120–800 mesh”, they are describing its adjustable product fineness range, not a fixed single PSD.

120–800 mesh for an ACM mill describes the adjustable product top-cut range: D97 ~125 μm (120 mesh) down to D97 ~15 μm (800 mesh). This fineness is achieved by tuning the dynamic air classifier, rotor tip speed, hammer count and airflow. Since ACM is screenless, the mesh value is a sieve-based commercial specification rather than a physical screen size. For abrasive mineral processing, wear protection is mandatory especially when running toward the fine 800 mesh end.
