What Is ACM Mill for Food Industry

Food industry ACM mill (air classifying mill) is a sanitary-grade dry impact grinding and integrated air classification system, designed for processing dry brittle food raw materials, food additives and nutraceutical ingredients. It meets food contact safety standards, controls particle size distribution to improve mixing, solubility, mouthfeel and product consistency. It combines grinding and classification in one machine, with adjustable fineness from 120 mesh to 800 mesh.

Typical Food Industry Applications

1. Food mineral additives
   Food-grade calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, magnesium carbonate, tricalcium phosphate, mineral fortifying powders for bakery, dairy and nutritional supplements.
2. Spices & dry seasonings (brittle varieties)
   Dry cinnamon bark, ginger, pepper, nutmeg, cloves. Note: high oil spices are not suitable; oil will cause sticking and agglomeration.
3. Nutraceutical & dietary supplement raw materials
   Dry brittle plant extracts, shell powder (oyster shell, eggshell), fruit shell powder. Fibrous plant materials are not recommended.
4. Food functional fillers & excipients
   Dextrose, lactose, maltodextrin (brittle grades), edible talc and food-grade silica as anti-caking agents.
5. Feed & pet food mineral ingredients
   Mineral supplements for animal and pet nutrition.

Fineness Range for Food ACM

D50: 18–70 μm, adjustable D97 from 120 mesh to 800 mesh.
Controlled fine tail is critical: excessive ultrafine powder may cause poor flow, dusting or inconsistent mixing. Hammer count and rotor tip speed are optimized to avoid over-grinding.

Food Grade Construction Requirements

1. Product contact parts: 304 or 316L stainless steel, polished surface, no dead corners to prevent material residue and bacterial growth.
2. Seals and gaskets: FDA food-grade PTFE or food silicone, non-toxic, no migration.
3. Easy disassembly: quick-release structure for tool-free cleaning, suitable for batch changeover and sanitation.
4. No cross-contamination: fully closed negative-pressure operation. Separate cleaning protocols for different products.
5. Lubrication: food-grade lubricant for bearings, preventing oil contamination into food powder.

Operational & Temperature Control

• Heat-sensitive food ingredients require water cooling jacket to limit grinding heat, avoid oxidation, flavor loss or thermal degradation.
• Outlet temperature controlled below 40–50°C for most food materials.
• Hammer selection: moderate hammer quantity to reduce frictional heat and limit excess ultrafine fines. More hammers generate extra heat and fine dust.
• Feed moisture requirement: less than 3–4%. High moisture feed leads to powder sticking on chamber and classifier wheel.

Safety & Hygiene Features

1. ATEX explosion protection for combustible organic food dust (spices, sugar powder).
2. Anti-static design and conductive filter media to prevent static discharge.
3. Sanitary pulse dust collector with oil-free, dry compressed air for filter bag cleaning. Oil contamination must be strictly avoided.
4. Dust containment to reduce product loss and operator exposure to food dust.

Limitations of Food ACM Mill

1. Not suitable for high-oil, high-fat, sticky or wet materials (nut kernels, oily seeds). They stick to rotor and chamber walls.
2. Long fibrous plant materials cannot be processed, fibers will wrap around the rotor and classifier wheel.
3. Only for dry milling; feed moisture must be strictly controlled.
