Pharmaceutical ACM mill (air classifying mill) is a cGMP-compliant integrated impact grinding + dynamic air classification system for dry brittle pharmaceutical materials. It delivers tightly controlled particle size distribution, which directly impacts drug dissolution, bioavailability, blend uniformity and formulation stability. Unlike screen hammer mills, ACM adjusts fineness by classifier wheel speed without changing screens, making it easier for process validation and multi-product batch changeover.
Typical Pharma Applications
- Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs)
Dry, brittle APIs for solid oral dosage forms (tablets, capsules). Particle size control ensures consistent dissolution rate. Not for submicron inhalable grade (jet mill is preferred for inhalation API). - Pharmaceutical excipients
Calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, starch derivatives, brittle functional excipients. - Herbal & botanical medicine
Dry brittle herbal raw materials, herbal extracts, nutraceutical and dietary supplement powders. Fibrous herbs are not suitable. - Deagglomeration
Break soft agglomerates from dried granulation batches without excessive over-grinding.
Fineness Range for Pharmaceutical ACM
D50: 20–75 μm, D97 adjustable from 120 mesh to 400 mesh.
For pharma production, PSD must be stable and repeatable batch-to-batch. Hammer count and rotor tip speed are carefully limited to avoid generating excess ultrafine fines, which negatively impacts powder flow and blending.
Core GMP Design Specifications
- Product contact material: 316L stainless steel, electropolished surface finish Ra ≤0.8 μm, minimal dead corners to avoid powder residue buildup.
- Seals & gaskets: FDA-compliant silicone or PTFE.
- Quick disassembly: tool-free removal of hammers, classifier wheel and liners for full cleaning and cleaning validation.
- Documentation package: support IQ/OQ/PQ validation, material certificates, FAT/SAT test records.
- Negative pressure fully closed system: prevents powder leakage and cross-contamination. For high-potency APIs, glovebox containment design is available to meet OEL occupational exposure limits.
Thermal & Operational Control
- Heat-sensitive drugs require water-jacket cooling on grinding chamber to keep outlet temperature low, prevent thermal degradation of API.
- Operating temperature controlled below 40–50°C for most APIs.
- Hammer count selection: moderate hammer configuration to limit frictional heat and control fine tail. Too many hammers create extra heat and excessive ultrafine particles.
Safety Features
- ATEX / explosion protection for combustible organic pharmaceutical dust.
- Anti-static grounding, conductive filter media.
- Vibration, temperature and overload interlock protection.
- Dust collector: sanitary pulse baghouse with oil-free, dry compressed air for filter cleaning.
Limitations for Pharma ACM
- Not suitable for fibrous, sticky, high-oil, moist raw materials (will wrap rotor or stick to chamber walls).
- Not for sub-10 μm ultra-fine inhalable API; jet mill is the standard choice for inhalation powder.
- Only for dry milling; feed moisture generally below 3%.
Pharmaceutical ACM mill is a cGMP sanitary air classifying mill for dry brittle APIs, excipients and herbal medicine powder. It produces powder from 120–400 mesh with repeatable PSD. It uses 316L electropolished contact parts, easy-clean structure and temperature control. Hammer configuration, airflow and classifier speed are tuned to control fines generation and avoid API thermal degradation.
